Best interests of the child: What are they? And who decides? (Pauline)

  • Many people are involved in determining the child’s best interests (Esther)
  • Example from the field (Bodil): But in WPAs, it seems everyone (parents, school, government, NGO) has a different vision of a child’s best interest. E.g. beating children is in their best interests, because it will help them learn.
  • This is why establishing ‘rules’ is important (e.g. Convention on the Rights of the Child; South Sudan Child Act) (Annabel, Bodil)
  • But you can’t win over parents by saying “Here’s what the CRC says.” Attitude, then behaviour change is required (Elise, James, Bodil)

What are your thoughts on this? Do you have any examples to share?
