Best interests of the child: What are they? And who decides? (Pauline)
- Many people are involved in determining the child’s best interests (Esther)
- Example from the field (Bodil): But in WPAs, it seems everyone (parents, school, government, NGO) has a different vision of a child’s best interest. E.g. beating children is in their best interests, because it will help them learn.
- This is why establishing ‘rules’ is important (e.g. Convention on the Rights of the Child; South Sudan Child Act) (Annabel, Bodil)
- But you can’t win over parents by saying “Here’s what the CRC says.” Attitude, then behaviour change is required (Elise, James, Bodil)
